Has your Wilmington holistic and biological dentist ever told you that your gums are receding? This is what happens when your gums start to slowly detach from your teeth. It can cause big problems for your oral and overall health.

Why Are My Gums Receding?

Sometimes there’s nothing you can do to prevent your gums from receding because it can be caused by genetics and passed down to you by your parents. The American Dental Association notes that receding gums can also be caused by:

  • Injury
  • Gum disease
  • Overbrushing
  • Tobacco use

When your gums recede, it can also expose certain areas of your teeth which means you might experience increased sensitivity and decay.

Tips From Your Holistic and Biological Dentist in Wilmington

There are a few ways you can reduce your risk for receding gums that can be effective for many patients. Some people see results using oil pulling. This is when you swish either coconut, sesame, and sunflower oil around your gums and mouth for anywhere from five to twenty minutes to rid them of bacteria. Some studies suggest that when combined with your regular brushing and flossing routine, you can easily get rid of bad bacteria in your mouth.

Other studies have shown that using a mouthwash that has extracts of clove, basil, or tea tree oil can also be beneficial. We’ve also found that peppermint oil can help rid your gums of bacteria and keep them from receding. Other patients have had success using a topical aloe vera gel that can be helpful in treating gum disease
