Did you know that September is World Alzheimer’s Month? This is when we, as your biological and holistic dentists in Wilmington, pair up with Alzheimer’s Disease International to help raise awareness about this vital health subject and how it relates to you as our valued patient. More importantly, we want you to understand the correlation or link that’s been discovered between your periodontal or gum health and other systemic diseases in your body.

What You Need to Know

Search for gum disease and its ties to dementia and Alzheimer’s. You’re sure to find some relevant and timely information as this is becoming increasingly known in the medical and dental communities. We all know that practicing perfect oral hygiene can help do more than just maintain your oral health. When your gums aren’t in top shape, studies find that they can make health issues throughout your body even worse. This is something your Wilmington biological and holistic dentists refer to as the “oral-systemic link.” This article shows how research has even linked cardiovascular (heart) and periodontal (gum) disease. In it, Sam Low, DDS, MS, a past president of the American Academy of Periodontology, says that “we have been able to establish is that the chronic inflammatory reactions that occur with gum disease parallel what you see in other major chronic inflammatory diseases, especially cardiovascular disease, diabetes, respiratory diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, recent data with Alzheimer’s.”

What to Look Out For

The theme of this year’s World Alzheimer’s Month campaign is early diagnosis. So, your holistic and biological dentists in Wilmington wanted to share with you signs of dementia (that can lead to Alzheimer’s) that everyone should be aware of, including:

  1. Memory loss
  2. Difficulty performing familiar tasks
  3. Problems with language
  4. Disorientation to time and place
  5. Poor or decreased judgment
  6. Problems keeping track of things
  7. Misplacing things
  8. Changes in mood or behavior
  9. Trouble with images and spatial relationships
  10. Withdrawal from work or social activities

If you or someone in your family is experiencing any of these problems, please consult your physician or primary care provider for an appointment.
