Their findings, published in JAMA Internal Medicine, suggest that mindful meditation can help ease psychological stresses like anxiety, depression, and pain.”

For the last two years, every morning before we start our day, we practice 15-30 minutes of yoga and meditation,” says Laci. “We have found that everybody is happier from it. The kids are better able to focus, we have less tantrums and more willingness to communicate…We have all become closer because of our yoga practice.”

Drink More Water

You should be drinking half your body weight everyday. To avoid being in and out of bed all night, complete your water intake about two hours before bedtime. Drinking spring water or water purified by reverse osmosis can help ease joint pain, prevent headaches, improve circulation of nutrients, help prevent cancer, flush away waste, make your skin glow, and even help you stay in a better mood!  And here’s the real news: If you wait until you feel thirsty to have a drink, you are already dehydrated!

Avoid the Microwave

That’s right! Because your microwave heats food in a completely different way, heating water molecules by tearing them apart and forcefully deforming them (sounds crazy, right?). If you have the need for speed, try doubling up on the meals you prepare, freeze half, and warm the second half in the oven. 

Read Food Labels

Even foods that look or sound healthy sometimes contain hydrogenated oils. Hydrogenated oils are some of the most unhealthy additives in foods today. Why? The problem lies in how they are produced. Natural and often healthy oils are put under pressure and heated to extreme temperatures. A catalyst is then injected into the oil, usually a metal such as nickel or aluminum. This rearranges the molecular structure and increases its density. That doesn’t really sound like a natural food to us! Be especially careful with prepared spreads, sauces, mayonnaise, coffee creamers, and baked goods.

Keep it Natural

Clean living is healthy living.

  • Avoid using pesticides in your home and garden.
  • When you shop look for foods that are as natural as possible such as organic fruits and vegetables, pasture raised eggs, and sun-dried salts.
  • Never use artificial sweeteners.
  • Change your cleaning products and your hair and skin care products to eliminate sulfates, parabens, wheat, and artificial fragrances. 

Get Outside

Walk at least three times a week and keep your heart rate at 55% – 75% of your maximum heart rate. Being outside also helps you get your vitamin D. If you can’t get it naturally, take a capsule of Vitamin D3 with food every day. Your body needs it!


Not enough sleep is one of the leading causes of health problems in Americans. We need 7-9 hours of sleep and it should be in cool, completely dark room. Drinking alcohol or caffeinated beverages can disrupt sleep, as can eating just before bed, keeping an irregular sleep schedule, and using electronics in bed. Don’t do it! Get in a regular routine and gently put yourself to sleep the way you would a child. You deserve it!

Clean Water for Our Delaware Community – and the Earth

filtering of waterWhy All About Smiles Uses an Amalgam Separator

We rarely think about water here in the US where we just turn a tap to be delivered a stream of pure, clean water. We run water all day long – washing dishes, getting a cool glass to drink, letting our kids play in the tub, on the potscrubber cycle of the dishwasher, even when we brush our teeth. It seems that, if the earth is made up of mostly water letting it run shouldn’t be considered “a waste.”

The truth is, fresh water is a commodity. More than 97% of the earth’s water is salt water. How much fresh water does that leave? Not much. But there is more. Of that 2.5% of fresh water, 68.7% is frozen – and not as bags of ice at the handy mart. That doesn’t leave very much water for people on the planet to use and drink, does it? Worse yet, in the last century, global demand for water has increased six fold.  

Water is also becoming increasingly polluted. Just take a look at America’s great rivers – about 40% of of them are too polluted for fishing, swimming, or for aquatic life to survive in.

Here at All About Smiles, we are doing a number of things to protect water and reduce the amount of water we use. Of course, we encourage our patients, young and old, to turn off the water while they brush.

Another, and to us, a very important way we protect both Delaware’s and the earth’s water – and our community’s health – is by using an amalgam separator every time we remove, or work on, a mercury-amalgam filling.

Why Keep Amalgams Out of the Water

As the demand for water increases, it becomes more important than ever to make sure the water we use is properly treated and cleaned before it is disposed of. Proper cleaning of water ensures that we may use water again and again. But some things just shouldn’t go in the water in the first place – including the harmful, toxic mercury contained in amalgam fillings. Patients come to us from all over the country to have their metal fillings removed and replaced with more holistic tooth-colored fillings.

During the removal procedure, bits of the metal filling are washed into our water system. Without an amalgam separator, those bits of filling would enter the public wastewater system. That’s important because one large amalgam filling contains as much mercury as in those old-fashioned thermometers we used as children. That’s enough mercury to contaminate a 10-square-mile lake and cause restricted fishing. Six years ago, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized that dental offices are the largest source of mercury discharged to publicly-owned treatment works. All About Smiles refuses to be part of that problem! Amalgam separators may be expensive, but when it comes to keeping both the planet and our patients healthy, we never let cost stand in our way.

Meditate Your Way to Marvelous

This isn’t make believe or some kind of new-age delusion. Modern technology has allowed scientists to study the effects of meditation on the brain. And while the results may have been surprising to some, to those of us at All About Smiles who meditate on a regular basis and have done so for years, the results simply proved what we have known all along. The Benefits of Meditation

Brainwaves have frequencies, five of them to be exact. And while they are very complex and overlap, they signal different states of mind and brain activity from hyper-alert gamma to deep sleep delta. MRI scans have shown that when we are anxious, frightened, or irritated, our brains are often in a state of beta brain activity. Meditation can bring those frequencies down to alpha waves, the waves associated with a more calm and relaxed state of mind and also with play, creativity, and imagination.

For years, practitioners of meditation have also believed that meditation can reduce pain. Scientists have used MRIs to test this theory using images of brains experiencing pain and on pharmaceuticals. Surprisingly, placebos had similar effects on the brain to the pharmaceuticals, which confirms that simply thinking about reducing pain can reduce it in a real and measurable way. This was also tested and confirmed when focusing on pain reduction through meditation and was tracked by MRI imaging. Activity in the area directly related to pain was shown to decrease simply through concentration.
